Feature: Heritage Brands- Ellesse
Founded by Leonardo Servadio in Perugia back in 1959, Ellesse has become one of the key figures in a line up of cult classic sports wear brands.
Taking its name from the initials of its founder, the Italian brand takes inspirations from the classic athleticisms of its home nation- originally making its claim through skiwear during the 1970’s.
Much like a few others of its counterparts, Ellesse grew a reputation through performance clothing; namely tennis. The sport was adored not just by the Italians, but by people all over the world, leading to the brand gaining instant acclaim.
These two passions are symbolized by Ellesse’s unmissable logo- a tennis ball dissected by the tips of a set of skis.
The 1970’s and 80’s saw huge growth for Ellesse, who began to develop a casual wear line that influenced classic style icons with a sporting flair.
As one of the first sports brands to boldly display its logo on the outside of its designs, Ellesse drew attention to itself anywhere it went- something that gained the brand a huge following in the UK through the casuals movement.
However, whether on the terrace or on the court, Ellesse continued to make an impact, bringing athletic functionality to a streetwise style. Endorsements from the likes of Formula One legend Alain Prost and tennis icon Boris Becker sealed their sporting credentials, whilst cult figures such as Roger Moore and Muhammad Ali supplied the brand with an edge that perfectly delivered its stylish credentials.
Meanwhile, on the big screen, appearances in films like ‘The Business’ secured Ellesse’s status as being in the ascendency when it comes to nailing a heritage look that pours of sporting nostalgia- a style winner when it comes to cracking the ultimate in well dressed casual style.
