Style Sessions: Learn to Layer
The Art of Winter Layering
With the climate becomingly decidedly colder in recent weeks, you may well have found yourself scrambling to find something in your wardrobe that can put up a fight with the plummeting temperatures.
If keeping warm without looking like you’ve gone out as the Michelin man is firmly on your radar this month, then take a leaf out of our book and layer up for a comfortable, well thought out and fashionable look.
Forget the cumbersome heavy weight jacket, and get rid of that hideously chunky jumper- layering up can offer supreme warmth without the feeling of being weighed down by some seriously heavy-duty outerwear.
From smart styling to classic urban looks, check out this quick fire guide to layering up the right way for the encroaching winter.
Urban Layers
You know the drill- a Saturday stroll through town, a trip to the pub, a day out somewhere with mates- either way, you don’t need to be stepping out the house looking like you’re trying to make David Beckham look rough.
For a laid back casual look, concentrate on layering with basic essentials. Start from the base up with a pair of retro runner sneakers and a pair of slim fitting dark denim jeans. The perfect start for any laid-back look, these two elements of classic Street wear go hand in hand to deliver a crisp and clean start.
On murky days, a t shirt and classic sports sweat can provide the warmth- but, if you’re stepping out on a day that looks like a scene out of The Day After Tomorrow, you may well want to add a plaid shirt underneath that sweat to provide a touch more warmth.
Finally, with your closing layer, create a heritage inspired look with a bomber jacket. The G-Star Clackby Reversible Bomber Jacket is cut out to do just that, with its quilted construction adding plenty of warmth, whilst its ribbed neck line offers that old school bomber jacket style that has been a staple piece of winter urban style for years.

Smart Layers
Dinner out, a night with your significant other or just because you fancy scrubbing up well- layering up with some smarter essentials can make you feel like you could give GQ a run for their money in the style stakes.
Smarter looks always take lessons from the past and use them to great effect by adding a contemporary twist. Start your attire off with a pair of brown brogue boots- hard wearing and incredibly versatile, a pair of brogue boots adds sleek details to a timeless look.
Team them up with dark tapered fitting denim. Skinny jeans can make brogues look too clunky, so a tapered fit will keep you well proportioned. Dark denim is a winter style essential, as it links in with pretty much any colour of shirt or jumper- so trust it to give you a useful basis for your look.
A patterned shirt will add a flash of detail, but make sure it runs throughout the entire piece, including the collar, as the body of it will be covered up with a piece of knitwear. If you prefer a heritage look, opt for a classic check shirt instead.
Choose a basic piece of knitwear that won’t detract from the shirt- too many patterns will be overkill, but, if you’d rather have a statement knit, swap the patterned shirt for a classic plain Oxford and let your jumper make all the statements.
Finally, add a smart winter style essential with the Diesel W-Champ Wool Jacket. Double breasted for a truly authentic look, this piece of outerwear from the Italian denim masters features high shine engraved buttons and a military inspired look thanks to should epaulettes and cuff fastenings.
Add a scarf and turn the collar up when the wind bites, and leave it open when you’re warming up- this jacket offers a great range of fashionable versatility.
